Appreciative Inquiry
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a process that focuses on what is working well, builds on strengths, and envisions a path forward to create the best version of an organization, group, team, or person.
Appreciative Inquiry can be used in many aspects of our lives and work. Within an organization, Appreciative Inquiry can be used for short- and long-term planning, building a vision, charting new paths, team building, personal planning, and more.
Appreciative Inquiry doesn't ignore what isn't working but reframes it into opportunities. The process adds value, looks for the strengths (i.e., appreciative), and asks questions in a way that produces energy and momentum to what could be (i.e., inquiry). Dr. Gano is the author and editor of several works on Appreciative Inquiry and Sense of Belonging.
In this episode of Student Affairs Now, Dr. Oxendine and Dr. Gano discuss appreciative inquiry and how it can be used in today's organizations, including Higher Education.
Brian C. Gano, Ed.D., M.P.A, M.A.
I have over 20 years of experience facilitating groups through team building, training, short- and long-term planning, professional development, and critical group dialogue. Much of my experience has been working at colleges and universities but I have also worked at non-profits and businesses.
Throughout my career, I have sought to reframe issues in order to find opportunities where others saw challenges. In my doctoral program at UNCW, I was formally introduced to Appreciative Inquiry as a practice. AI's approach aligns with the way I have approached leadership, management, and facilitation.
I enjoy working with groups to help them find new paths forward, come together as a team, and envision the best possible future for themselves and their organization.

Sense of Belonging
A sense of belonging is a basic human need that is met through consistent, constant, and positive relationships.
Organizations can create an environment where it is possible for its members to find belonging. For belonging to flourish, these environments need to be supportive, safe, and validating.
